A BMW i4 replace-battery banner after a short Tampa trip points at the 12-volt. It’s not calling out the drive pack. That small AGM boots iDrive, the locks, and Neutral. Short hops and a long AC season wear it out first. You can still show plenty of range and wake up to a black cabin.

The i4 and the iX share this weak point. Both feed a heavy electronics load from a modest AGM. Both keep sipping power while they sit. Both will still drive while you’re moving. Both can refuse to wake after a night in a Carrollwood driveway.

The warning is the 12-volt, not the pack

BMW’s message is easy to misread the first time. It often says increased discharge when stationary, continued driving possible, replace battery. That sentence is about the auxiliary AGM. The high-voltage pack can sit at a healthy percent and the warning still fires.

Continued driving possible is true while the car is in motion. The drive system keeps the 12-volt topped up as you go. That support stops once you park. A tired AGM can dump overnight. Morning looks like a total failure: no iDrive, no handles, no Neutral.

Finish the trip you’re already on. Don’t treat the banner as a later problem. If the car has already gone dark once, the warning is why you’re stranded.

A BMW i4 12v battery dead event feels like the whole EV failed. It didn’t, because the computers never booted. That’s why a public charger in Tampa won’t help until the 12-volt wakes.

Short Tampa trips and AC season kill this battery first

Tampa Bay runs air conditioning from spring into late fall. Cabin cooling, iDrive, cameras, and the modem all load the 12-volt. Many i4 owners here never take a long highway charge cycle. They hop Town ‘n’ Country to the airport. They hop Westchase onto the Veterans Expressway. They hop Valrico along SR-60 and Plant City on I-4. The car moves, but the AGM still ages.

Recurrent Auto’s published research is about pack range, not this little battery. An EV loses only about 5 percent of range at 90°F. Above 95°F the loss is 20 to 30 percent. Near 100°F it’s about 17 to 18 percent. That loss varies by model. Those numbers come from Recurrent, not from a guess. The 12-volt feels the same heat as chemistry stress. Heat dries and ages AGM plates. Short drives never let them recover.

Westchase, Fish Hawk, and Lakewood Ranch hold some of the newest housing here. Pre-1980 stock is about 1 percent or less there. Home 240-volt charging is common in those planned communities. Plugging in every night still won’t save a 12-volt that’s already below spec. You can charge the pack in Westchase and still wake to a black screen.

Lealman and St. Petersburg hold much older housing. More than half of those homes were built before 1980. Those older streets weren’t built around a wall box. Pinellas condo owners can install a charger in an assigned space under Statute 718.113(8). A declaration can’t block a proper request. The owner still pays for the install and the meter. Plenty of beach and condo i4s still live on public charging. A car that sits between those sessions matches this warning.

Utilities won’t revive a dying AGM. Tampa Electric serves Tampa, most of Hillsborough, and parts of Pinellas and southern Pasco. Duke Energy Florida covers Pinellas and much of Pasco. Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative serves north and central Pasco. A Land O’ Lakes driver is often a WREC member, not a TECO customer.

Where the AGM actually sits

Open the hood on an i4 and you won’t see the 12-volt. BMW put it in the back. There’s no frunk and no front access point.

On the i4, the AGM sits in the trunk on the passenger side. You pull a panel behind the liner to reach the terminals. The trunk latch is electronic, so a dead 12-volt won’t pop it. Slide the metal key blade out of the fob. Unlock the driver’s door and fold the rear seat. Then reach the trunk from the cabin.

On the iX, the 12-volt sits under the right cargo floor, beneath the load cover. The powered tailgate stays shut with no 12-volt. Use the same key-blade path. Fold the seatbacks if you need to get in from inside.

If you only need a jump, skip the trunk fight. BMW put remote posts under the hood for this dead-car case.

Use the hood posts, not the trunk, to wake it

The interior hood release is mechanical and still works with zero 12-volt. Look for a red cap on the driver’s side near the firewall or fuse box. That’s the positive jump post. For ground, use unpainted metal on the chassis rail.

Connect positive to positive first. Then clamp the negative to that chassis ground. Let it sit two to three minutes. Try to wake the car. iDrive can take another 30 to 45 seconds to boot.

A full safety walkthrough is in our guide to jumping an EV without damage. If the screen returns and then dies on the same trip, stop driving. That battery can’t hold load. Another jump on I-275 won’t repair it.

BMW’s larger EVs fail the same way. If you also park an i5 or i7, read the 12-volt fix those owners miss.

What a dying 12-volt looks like before it strands you

Watch the pattern, not a single light.

What you seeWhat it usually means
iDrive stays black and the cabin is silentThe 12-volt is fully down
The fob unlocks, but the car still won’t bootVoltage is too low for the computers
Random warnings, then a sudden shutdownThe 12-volt is sagging under load
The trunk button does nothingVoltage is below the latch threshold
The car wakes, then resetsThe 12-volt can’t hold a charge

Two dark mornings in a few months usually means replacement, not another jump. BMW wants the new AGM registered with ISTA or a compatible tool. Skip that registration and the car won’t charge the new battery correctly. Part and labor prices couldn’t be confirmed from the sources reviewed here. Ask the shop for a written quote. Confirm they’ll register the battery to the VIN before you pay.

A week at TPA, or a week sitting after a storm

Tampa International Airport publishes free EV charging in the on-airport garages and the cell phone lot. Level 1 J1772 is in the Economy Garage and in Long-Term Parking. Level 2 is at the Cell Phone Lot. Exact stall counts weren’t confirmed on the airport page for this article. Confirm the current layout on tampaairport.com before you plan around a specific stall. A week at TPA usually kills a weak 12-volt, not the pack. SkyConnect still gets you to the car. It won’t boot the computers.

Cruise weeks and storm weeks create the same sit. Hurricane Helene in late September 2024 drove record storm surge at Tampa Bay gauges. St. Petersburg faced a forecast of 5 to 8 feet of surge. Barrier islands from the Dunedin Causeway through Tierra Verde were closed. Hurricane Milton in early October 2024 largely spared Pinellas a second catastrophic surge. It still dropped at least 18 inches of rain on parts of St. Petersburg. Cars that sat through those weeks were prime 12-volt victims.

Vaisala’s lightning data puts this metro among the most lightning-prone in the country. A car sitting unused after a storm delay is another AGM drain window.

Ruskin, Apollo Beach, and Gibsonton sit in south Hillsborough evacuation zones with low-lying Pinellas. Leaving on a weak 12-volt is a bad plan. The iDrive warning is your cue to replace the AGM before the next sit.

If the i4 is already dark on a Tampa Bay road

Stand right next to the handle with the fob first. The passive antenna can drop before the 12-volt is fully dead. If that fails, use the key blade in the driver’s door.

Once you’re in, pull the hood release. Use the jump posts if you have a pack. If you don’t, call for help. Don’t stand in a travel lane.

FDOT Road Rangers in District 7 patrol I-4, I-75, I-275, and the airport interchange. Dial *347 on a mobile phone. They publish flat-tire help, a 12-volt jump, fuel, and water. They also offer two local calls and a move to a safer spot. Their published list doesn’t include charging an EV. A jump may be enough for this i4 warning. An empty pack is a different problem.

Florida Statute 316.194 says you stay off the paved travel lane when you can. A disabled EV on the shoulder is covered by the exemption in subsection (2). Put the hazards on and stay out of traffic. Florida Highway Patrol Troop C covers disabled vehicles on the interstates.

The Selmon REL from Brandon to downtown has no local surface shoulder on that span. THEA clears those lanes before each reversal. No stranded car should remain in the median. A dark i4 there is a traffic problem. The Veterans Expressway and the Suncoast Parkway are all-electronic Turnpike roads. The Sunshine Skyway is about four miles of bridge with no place to linger. FHP closes it at sustained 40 mph winds. Fog under about 100 feet of visibility can close it too.

Hillsborough and Pinellas cap non-consent tow rates at the county level. Hillsborough uses the Tax Collector’s vehicle-for-hire authority. Pinellas sets its cap in Ordinance 19-39. Exact current dollar caps weren’t confirmed against the live ordinance schedules. Confirm the posted rate with the tower and the county before you pay.

Charge Pro TPA is a referral line. We match stranded EV drivers with independent local operators. We don’t own trucks, and we don’t employ technicians. We don’t set a price or promise an arrival time. The operator quotes you before work starts and bills you directly. What they bring is a 240-volt Level 2 source. It typically adds 10 to 20 miles in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival window. They can also jump or replace a dead 12-volt on site. They handle Tesla and every major EV brand, including the i4 and iX.

For a BMW that won’t wake, start with non-Tesla EV rescue. If the car wakes after a jump and then dies again, don’t keep driving it. Get it to a shop that can register a new AGM.

Frequently asked questions

What does the BMW i4 replace battery message mean?

It points to the 12-volt AGM, not the drive battery. You can usually finish the trip. The pack keeps that 12-volt charged while you drive. The failure shows up after you park. Replace the AGM before the next overnight sit.

How do you wake a BMW i4 with a dead 12-volt?

Use the mechanical hood release. Clamp a jump pack to the red positive post, then to chassis ground. Wait two to three minutes. Give iDrive another half minute to boot. If you need the battery itself, use the key blade. Then fold the rear seat.

Can Road Rangers help a dark BMW i4 on I-275?

They can jump a 12-volt. Their published District 7 services don’t include charging the pack. Dial *347 on I-4, I-75, I-275, or at the airport interchange. If it still won’t hold a charge, call a local mobile operator.

If the i4 is dark and the fob does nothing, call (813) 536-4545. Charge Pro TPA will connect you with an independent operator. They’ll quote a 12-volt jump or on-site replacement before work starts.
