Tesla roadside assistance is free only for some warranty stalls. That’s Tesla’s national program, not a local club. An empty pack, a flat, or a lockout still gets billed. In Tampa Bay, Charge Pro TPA is a referral line. Independent operators quote you first, then bill you themselves.
Free means a covered defect, not every stall
Tesla folds roadside help into the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. On most models that’s four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check the Tesla app or your purchase papers for your car. Tesla’s published terms can change, so confirm your window. You don’t pay a yearly roadside membership for that window. Coverage starts when you buy the car and ends with that basic warranty.
The free part is tied to a covered mechanical or electrical defect. If a warranty fault left you stuck, Tesla may send a mobile tech. A covered-defect tow is typically included at no charge. If you drained the pack on I-275, that isn’t a defect. Tesla treats it as an energy service, and you pay. See what Tesla roadside covers, and what Tampa Bay drivers still need for the local split.
Warranty stalls Tesla usually won’t bill
When the stall is a covered fault, Tesla’s published policy is no roadside bill. These are the usual no-charge cases under that warranty.
- A 12-volt battery that won’t wake the car
- A drive-unit or high-voltage fault that makes the car undriveable
- A software glitch that traps you in Park or locks the doors
- Other mechanical defects still inside the four-year, 50,000-mile window
A dead 12-volt shows up a lot in this climate. Tampa Bay runs a long AC season, and heat works that small battery hard. Recurrent Auto’s research finds about 5 percent range loss near 90°F. Above 95°F, loss sits around 20 to 30 percent. That’s pack range, not a 12-volt spec. The same heat still ages the 12-volt in parked cars. Start with how to tell a Tesla 12V is dead if the car won’t wake.
If Tesla tows under a covered defect, that tow is typically included. Winching can be included when the car is stuck. Off-road use and clear misuse stay excluded from that help. The Battery and Drive Unit warranty lasts longer, usually eight years. Mileage caps vary by model, so check yours in the app. A pack or drive-unit failure in year six may still be a warranty repair. Whether Tesla also waives the roadside dispatch in that gap isn’t always clear. Ask Tesla before you assume the truck is free.
The calls Tesla bills even while you’re in warranty
This is the list that catches people on I-75, I-4, and the Veterans Expressway.
Empty pack. Tesla doesn’t treat a zero-range stall as a defect. You pay for an energy service call on that stall. A local mobile charge is a different job. Operators typically add 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes. That’s charging time, not a promise of when anyone arrives.
Flat tires. Most Teslas don’t ship with a spare. A tire change, loaner wheel, or puncture repair is billed. District 7 Road Rangers patrol I-4, I-75, and I-275, plus the airport interchange. Dial *347 from the shoulder if you’re on those routes. Published services include tire help, a 12-volt jump, and fuel. They also list two local calls and moving a disabled vehicle to a safer spot. Their published services don’t include charging an EV. That doesn’t mean they refuse an EV on sight. It means charging isn’t in the written services.
Lockouts. Tesla can unlock the car, and it’s a paid call.
Crashes. Collision damage isn’t a warranty event under Tesla roadside. Tesla may help arrange a tow after a crash. You or your insurer pay for that tow.
Misuse and water. Off-roading, flood soak, and charge-port damage from third-party gear are excluded. Hurricane Helene’s 2024 surge and Milton’s rain made saltwater a live Tampa Bay risk. Federal and fire-service guidance warns a salt-soaked EV can be a later fire hazard. Keep it away from buildings and other cars until it’s inspected. Don’t treat Tesla roadside as flood coverage after a surge.
Florida Statute 316.194 covers stopping outside business or residence districts. You can’t leave a car on the paved highway when you can get it off. A dead Tesla on a shoulder counts as disabled under subsection (2). Put the hazards on and stay out of the travel lane.
After the basic warranty, Tesla roadside is pay-per-use
Once you pass four years or 50,000 miles, the no-charge mechanical roadside window ends. Dispatch, labor, and tows become billable unless a longer warranty still applies to that part.
Tesla doesn’t sell a roadside-only yearly plan the way some clubs do. After warranty, you call, they come, you pay. Some owners buy a Tesla Extended Service Agreement before the original warranty lapses. Auto-insurance roadside and credit-card plans are worth checking at home. Don’t sort that coverage on the Skyway at dusk.
The Sunshine Skyway is a hard place to sit in a national queue. The bridge run is about four miles. The main span sits 432 feet over the shipping channel. Florida Highway Patrol closes it when winds hit a sustained 40 mph. Fog can close it when visibility drops to about 100 feet. The Selmon reversible lanes run between Brandon and downtown Tampa. The elevated stretch has no local surface shoulder. Those lanes reverse through the day. Westbound into downtown runs from about 5 a.m. to noon. Then they clear the deck and send traffic east. A stall there isn’t a parking-lot wait.

National Tesla coverage versus a Tampa Bay referral
Tesla’s program is national, and the terms don’t change by county. Charge Pro TPA isn’t Tesla, and it isn’t a shop. We match stranded drivers with independent local mobile rescue operators. We don’t own trucks, employ technicians, or set prices. We also don’t promise an arrival time. The operator quotes you before they start and bills you directly.
That split matters on the calls Tesla treats as driver error. Out of charge on I-275 through Tampa is the clearest one. A Tesla roadside rescue operator can bring a 240-volt Level 2 source. Teslas take a native NACS plug at the bumper.
A dark car in a garage at Tampa International Airport is the other common pattern. TPA publishes free EV charging in on-airport garages and the cell phone lot. A car left for a week that won’t wake is often the 12-volt. Tesla may cover that 12-volt if it’s a warranty defect. A local jump still exists when you want a quote first.
The same referral covers St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and the Pasco runs on the Suncoast Parkway. A Tesla that won’t start in St. Petersburg follows the same split. Warranty defects go to Tesla under the national terms. An empty pack or a paid tire is whoever you hire.
Road Rangers remain useful on the interstates they patrol. District 1 runs its own patrols on I-75 through Manatee and Sarasota. They can jump a 12-volt and move you to a safer spot. They aren’t a mobile EV charger on those routes. Florida Highway Patrol Troop C handles disabled vehicles on those interstates.
Hillsborough and Pinellas cap non-consent tow rates at the county level. Exact dollar caps weren’t confirmed against the live ordinance schedules. If a lot tows you under Florida Statute 715.07, check the posted rates. Check the county cap too, not a blog estimate.
How to choose who you call
Call Tesla first when the car is under basic warranty. Call them when the stall looks like a covered defect. A drive-unit or pack-isolation fault belongs with Tesla. A car that won’t leave Park after a software fault is Tesla’s job.
Call a local operator when Tesla would bill you anyway. Empty pack, flat, lockout, or out of warranty: that’s the local quote.
You can call Tesla and a local operator in parallel if you aren’t sure. The local quote is yours to accept or decline. They shouldn’t start work without that quote in hand.
Don’t wait in a travel lane to sort coverage. Get the car as far off the pavement as you can. If you can’t, you’re a disabled vehicle under Florida law. Stay with the car only if that’s the safer choice.
Start with Tesla at zero on a Tampa Bay road for the empty-pack steps.
When to call Charge Pro TPA
If your Tesla is empty or dark, we can match you with an independent operator. They quote before they start, then bill you directly. Charging, when they do it, is typically 10 to 20 miles of range. That’s in 15 to 30 minutes of charging time.
Call (813) 536-4545 when you want that referral.
